My Gear Up New York Journey!

This summer, I am dedicating my time to serving others on one of The Ability Experience's cycling events called Gear Up New York. I will be joining a team that will travel across the Empire State from Niagara Falls to Manhattan in order to spread our message of empathy and acceptance for our friends with disabilities! We will meet with dozens of organizations that support people with disabilities along the way.

Since joining the Theta Theta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi in fall 2021, I have found a purpose for myself through service and leadership. What started as an interest has turned now into a commitment to give back and contribute to something bigger than myself. Over the past couple of years, I have been in various leadership committees within the organization, including the Risk Management Committee and currently being in the Philanthropy Committee for 3 years now. Each of these experiences has helped me grow personally and develop my passion for intentional leadership.
Service and Servant Leadership has always been important to me, and Pi Kappa Phi's mission to advocate for people with disabilities is perfectly aligned with my own beliefs. Being involved in The Ability Cycling Experience and our philanthropy week, 'War of the Roses,' has allowed me to meet some amazing people throughout the University of Iowa campus and witnessed the true impact of coming together and work together. I hope to encourage our members to lead with empathy and use their leadership roles to create lasting positive changes in their communities. I would love the opportunity to continue this journey and help make a positive difference in the world.

Riding with purpose

As this year comes to an end, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to move forward and what kind of impact I want to make. For me, that starts with being part of something bigger than myself.


My name is Luis Garcia, and I’m a student at the University of Iowa. This year, I’m raising funds for Gear Up New York, a signature event of Pi Kappa Phi’s Ability experience. A cycling journey from Buffalo to New York City. It’s not just about the miles on the road — it’s about the people we meet along the way. Riders visit organizations that support individuals with disabilities, hear their stories.
